The distinctive quality of Léon Akwadal’s work lies in his ability to place his painting in our era, suggesting a belonging to dimensions that transcend us. Dynamism and movement coexist with a reminder of the transience of all living beings; the images evoke connections between bodies and nature, and the subjects present a duality between example and relic.

There is no resort to spectacle: here there is an attraction to suggestion, the insistence of character that always seeks, giving the subject power and sensuality. A sensuality of risk that invites us to feel and register in a wild, animalistic way.

In Léon Akwadal’s works, matter comes to life. It is used both for itself and for its qualities of structure, colour, light and density – things that are sometimes enough to express the artist’s intentions – but above all as a material for giving birth to forms.

A careful gaze allows us to read the development of the figures and their slow transformation into volume, to follow the dust that becomes shadows and the movements of the brush that become lines.

Léon Akwadal was born on 17/08/1959 in Colmar, France. Self-taught, he began painting in 1977. His first exhibition was in Colmar in 1981. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in Colmar, Strasbourg, Albertville, Collioure, Tours, Paris, Soissons, Epernay, Milan, Weston, and Rome, as well as group exhibitions.
